GALSNGEAR at the 2023 NAB Show

Women’s Leadership Summit – An Amazing event you need to make time for!

Down to business

Let’s face it, it’s 2023. Do you feel you’re drowning in an industry of ever-changing stuff? From keeping up with content and concepts to new equipment and endless acronyms to memorize… it is nonstop. What perfect timing for this year’s GALSNGEAR Connect event!

“Find rest in the oasis of GalsNGear while at NAB!”

Find a new network of gals who are likely going through the same experiences at work that you have. Gain insights and techniques to freshen up a boring, old routine. For instance, I often fall prey to instincts and find myself asking my clients, ‘Why?’. Ouch! That is the top question to put someone on the defensive, even if you did not intend to.

Susan Borke helped us see that sticking to ‘how’ and ‘what’ questions will soften the blow and likely get more information than you originally thought.

“No gimmicks. No pressure.”

Amanda Sapp set out to energize and encourage us to remind ourselves that, “I am open and willing to receive and give LOVE.”

Having the right mindset MATTERS!

Having the right mindset MATTERS!

It may seem trite, but when you start your day or meeting with an affirmation of this magnitude, you set yourself up for success. Having the right mindset is critical. The first activity Amanda led us through had the entire room swapping tables to seek out one person to visit with, someone we didn’t know. From there, we both had to share something about ourselves that no one else knew. This was a timed event, so we had to move fast. It was a fun exercise – since both parties were open and vulnerable, it led to a quick connection.

The Leadership Panel

The panel was brilliantly put together. Juliana Broste was the moderator, and WOW! You must check out the stuff she puts together – another top lady in our industry!

Darley Newman: Host/Producer, Travels with Darley
Sharon Rossmark: CEO, Women and Drones
Margaret Craig: CEO, Signiant
Amanda Sapp: General Manager, Houston’s Amazing 102.5FM

So many nuggets of wisdom were shared. My hand was cramping from writing so much! The panel questions ranged from what everyone was excited about, tech trends they are seeing, how the pandemic has affected what each of them do, negotiating techniques, and finally, Q&A. The audience asked some great questions – my favorite was how they advocate for themselves to boost self-esteem. Here are some takeaways: wearing bright colors, remembering a past success, the next meal you’re looking forward to – all of these can be fuel to change your mood!

The panel ended with each of the gals sharing a recommendation for their must-see/do item at NAB 2023. No surprise here, the Centennial Celebration Center in the North Hall was plugged – happy 100th NAB! Another highly recommended item was to check out the show floor to visit the booths that were sponsoring this GalsNGear event. Here they are – if you missed any of these spaces, head over to their website for the latest & greatest!

An Incredible Opportunity

Lastly, it’s good to know that fellow gals are being brought up in our industry with full exposure to GalsNGear. Students from the HBCU bridge program at Bowie State & Morgan State were onsite, in the room, using the latest equipment to capture this event. What an incredible opportunity for these lucky ladies!

Until Next Time

Overall, I found this experience to gracefully sift out my shortfalls, so I could apply the methods learned to my day-to-day. I left feeling recharged and ready to test out some new skills! It felt fantastic to be in a room FULL of people who are encouraging, thoughtful, and inviting! 😊

Be sure to keep an eye out for where GalsNGear will be next time! I know I will. Maybe I’ll see you there!
